Bring Back Family Game Night

Your to-do list has probably been filled with shopping, planning, and extra holiday events. All the while, you're trying to make time to actually enjoy the season with your family. So we wanted to help cut down on your shopping time, while also helping you create memories with your family! Some of our favorite family memories and hardest laughs have come from times of playing games together. These family games are fun for both young and old, so the parents will enjoy game night just as much as the kids! Additionally, they have all been released in the last year or two, so you’re less likely to be getting a last minute gift that they already have.

Below, you'll find brand new games in 3 categories: low energy, high energy, and multiplayer video games. The low and high energy games are either board or card games that are sure to provide a great time, no matter how much energy the parents have by the end of the day! We'll begin with games for families with younger kids and continue up to games for teenage and adult children.

Preschool - 6 and up

Low energy:

"Tall Tales brings back the classic magic of imagination in a new and exciting family game. This creative, non-competitive storytelling game is for people of all ages. Players draw random story elements from a bag and twist their best tale using each piece, just like the world used to do before the technology revolution. The only limit is your imagination!"

High energy:

"Get smart and get heart with Silly Street, a game packed with good times and contagious laughter! Begin by drawing a card and performing the action to move your game piece down the giant silly street game board. Sounds simple, right? The genius lies in the actions on the cards which include; inventing stories about little characters in silly situations, finding and interpreting things on the board, contests between players and dramatic re-enactments of animals doing zany things!"

Video games:

Finding suitable video games for kiddos that can't read can be very difficult. There are plenty of new releases for this age in the single player 3DS or app category, but that’s not going to involve the whole family. Since 2012, very few multiplayer games have been released with the Early Childhood ESRB rating. Due to this, the video games listed below are rated for everyone and will require some help from the parents with reading or play, but will still be fun for the little ones. If you have any suggestions in this area, we’d love to hear about it!

Rocket League - Cross Platform: $19 - $40

"Rocket League is a high-powered hybrid of arcade soccer and driving with rewarding physics-based gameplay. Take to the pitch for a fully-featured offline season mode, multiple game types, casual and competitive online matches, and special “Mutators” that let you change the rules entirely. Express yourself with one of the deepest customization systems around and battle opponents on other platforms with groundbreaking cross-platform play!"

Low energy:

"Penguins are running through the school in the first flicking game ever to have pieces which curve and jump! The fun run begins - the rascals are running everywhere and trying to snatch up the fish on the way, but the Hall Monitor is trying to catch each one of them to have some order in the school. Who will be more successful? It’s not just cool, it’s Ice Cool!"

High energy:

"This could be the most fun families will have all year. It’s non-stop silliness as players choose five cards and race to do their tasks ASAP. Can they act like a dog, make a paper fan, take a photo, play air guitar, and cry before anyone else? Who knows! The player to finish first wins, but everyone will be doubled-over laughing like hyenas. (And, no, that’s not one of our prompts). "

Video Game:

Overcooked - Cross platform: $24 - $54

"New type of culinary co-op game. The Onion Kingdom is a rich world full of cruel and unusual kitchens for you to conquer. As you play the game, you'll unlock new levels, new chef characters, and a competitive challenge where teams of 2 go head-to-head."

Low energy:

"Kingdomino lifts the time-honored principle of dominoes to a new level – without losing any of the sleek elegance of its predecessor. On the contrary: the dual mechanics of planning the far-reaching lands surrounding the castle and the clever method of selecting tiles fit together extraordinarily well, they are expertly reduced to their essential components."

High energy:

"Find out if your minds are in sync with this fun family party game. Players try and match the Ringleader’s answers to score points. Players quickly write three answers from the category card to see how well they know the Ringleader. When a player matches the Ringleader, be the first to ring the bell and score bonus points! It’s easy to learn and fun to play!"

Video Game:

"Choose a fighting champion from around the world, equip your own combination of extendable arms, and then use a mix of button presses and quick hand motions to really take the fight to your opponent."

15 and up

Low energy:

"Hasbro's twist on the online viral 'Whisper Challenge' sensation, the 'Hearing Things Game' has players guessing what they think their teammate is saying by reading their lips. One player puts on the speech-cancelling electronic headphones and the other player says the random phrase shown on the card. The player wearing the headphones can't hear what their teammate is saying and has to figure it out to earn the card."

High energy:

"In Word Slam, two teams each have a storyteller. The two storytellers are given the same answer term. Playing at the same time, they must give clues to their teams so the teams can correctly guess the answer. And they must do this quickly, because they are racing the timer and each other. But it’s not that easy. Speaking and acting is absolutely forbidden for the storytellers! They must tell their stories using only 105 cards, each with one word on it- a noun, verb, adjective, or preposition. It’s like charades, but instead of acting, you can only communicate with word cards!"

Video Game:

Just dance 2018 - Cross Platform: $39 - $59

"Dance to 40 of the hottest songs from Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, and many more! Whether you’re a party starter, a dancer in the making, or a seasoned pro, you can join the fun. Great for family gatherings, parties, and holidays, Just Dance 2018 brings everyone together!"
